My philosophy, rated

Someone's stolen my plug sockets! I got into work nice and early at 8am, only to find my computer doesn't work because it isn't plugged in, and it isn't plugged in because... the plug sockets have been stolen! Seriously, there used to be a panel in the floor with all my precious power and network connections, and now there's just an untouched carpet tile! It's a bit spooky. *sigh* Obviously there has been some kind of misunderstanding.

Anyway, I tried this quiz Lilly had on her blog:

You scored as Materialist. Materialism stresses the essence of fundamental particles. Everything that exists is purely physical matter and there is no special force that holds life together. You believe that anything can be explained by breaking it up into its pieces. i.e. the big picture can be understood by its smaller elements.

Hmm, sounds a bit stark and scientisty. I agree with the above, but also hold that nothing is certain, everything is possible, and love can save the world, though I draw the line at the healing power of crystals. Sorry but if I've got a cold I'll take a lemsip over a lump of rose quartz any day. I should point out that I answered at least 50% of the questions with 'neither agree nor disagree', hence 31% fundamentalist! Yeah that's me, a dyed-in-the-wool fundamentalist!

I've just finished reading my first Iain M Banks book, Feersum Endjinn. Good fun, but I was actually expecting something even more out of this world! Probably been built up too much. Maybe his 'culture' novels are more what I was expecting. We'll see, I'll definitely be reading them at some point. As for the ending of Feersum Endjinn, it was a bit of a last minute dash round gathering loose ends. And what exactly does the 'Endjinn' do? Sure, leave it to the imagination. Thing is, I was really looking forward to finding out!!

Movie wise I must just quickly recommend Kung Fu Hustle. Funniest thing I've seen in years! Well, since Shaolin Soccer I guess (Stephen Chow's previous film). This guy's hilarious, and he really knows and loves film. He references everything from Casablanca to Spiderman and back to The Shining. The fight scenes involve over-the-top wirework and sfx mixed with classic Shaw brothers kung fu and a dash of the three Stooges. It's played for laughs, but is nonetheless hugely impressive.

Anyway, better get on with some work, and find those plug sockets!

You don't believe in the healing power of crystals??? What is wrong with you, James? Speaking of being "scientisty" ;-P

Good to see you're still alive and kicking -- and UPDATING YOUR BLOG!!! :-D

Now go get that bastard of a socket thief!!

'Scientisty' is a perfectly valid word that I just made up :-p

I want a smoke! It's nearly 3pm and I haven't taken a lunch break yet because I know I'll buy smokes the instant I step outside! I keep veering from "Ha! Excellent, I don't need cigarettes!" to "Sod it, one last day of smoking then I'll quit."

Think I'll just work through until 5pm, go home and gorge myself on junkfood as a substitute - no wait, that's no good either!

I need to indulge something. What's totally indulgent and has no bad side effects? Gin and tonic maybe? Hmm, no, beyond a certain quantity I have to admit that does have side effects...

It's a smashing word, James. You've helped me improve* my English language skills today - thanks :-)

"one last day of smoking then I'll quit" -- uuraaghhh!! That sounds soooo familier -- I really sympathise with you, I REALLY do! And I feel like a smoke too now...shit shit shit...I'd better get the hell outta here until I've managed to supress my cravings [again]!

That's my problem: I don't hate smoking. I love smoking. But I hate the damage it does to my health and those around me -- and my wallet too.

...but James, you should listen to your brother [not to me] -- besides, he's a CULTURAL CREATIVE. Yep. He sure is. They tend to know what they are on about; especially when it comes to not smoking :-D

I will listen to my brother. Ads is always right.

But about 'Feersum', yes I thought it was something like that, but the planet can't very well just go off touring the universe can it? And the solar system is too small a place to hide. Hmm, thinking about it, maybe the idea was to move closer to the Sun to balance the temperature... yeah, that makes sense.

I liked Ergates the ant. Pity he wasn't in it for long.

Good :-)

Did you find those plug sockets?

PS. Do you mind if I link your blog to my blog?

James Thomson said...

Link away, it's not a secret site. The plug sockets had been moved to the other side of the room to supply a new desk, leaving me to make alternative power arrangements. Bloody cheek!

Lilly said...

Alternative power arrangements --> who is sounding like a new age hippy now? ;-P

Big LOL @ Adam :-D

Lilly said...

Ok -- you should be linked now -- thought I'd better ask first. Just the kind of person I am.

James Thomson said...

Correction, Ads is sometimes right. I shall link back to your site too then Lilly, assuming that's cool! It's proper netiquette to ask isn't it?

Lilly said...

Netiquette -- another fantastic James-word! :-D

It's super-cool with me, James -- if you don't mind being [double] linked to my verbal diarrhea...

You bite your nails? That's sort of auto-cannibalism, is it not? Don't bite your nails -- have an apple [I nearly wrote 'have a fag' but I don't think that'd go down too well...].

Ian [M.] Banks -- Alan's got all his books I think -- they're sitting in the bookcase waiting for me to get started.....

So many gorgeous books in this world. So little time. It frustrates me.

Lilly said...

You certainly deserve a WELL DONE then :-D

James Thomson said...

Yes, yes, I will certainly write of that, but I'm busy today!

You guys are funny :-D
